It’s inevitable that college students get stressed sometimes. However, this stress can be overbearing, and can push students to the breaking point. Naturally, it can be difficult to balance schoolwork, part-time jobs, internships and a social life. In any master’s degree program, there’s going to be a lot of work. The University of Arizona’s online Master of Public Health is no different. Finding proper ways to balance these tasks can be hard. So how can online MPH students keep their heads above ground? Consider these four tips on the best ways to alleviate stress.

1. Step away from the stressor

If you have a big test or project due tomorrow, you’re probably going to continually study or work on it until it’s done. However, this isn’t always the best move. While you may think that you’re getting a lot done by not moving at all, you’re actually wasting more time. When you try to study for long periods of time, they end up not focusing on what actually needs to be taken care of, or it takes longer to complete. But when people take small breaks from studying, they have an easier time remembering what they just looked over and have and breeze getting back into what they’re doing. You forget that taking breaks will help the mind relax. Focus on something else and regroup before coming back to the stressful task.

2. Meditate

If you find that you’re constantly getting stressed over the smallest little things, meditation might be the right answer for you. This practice allows the mind to drift off to some other place and lets the body relax and calm down. Research has proven that this process actually lowers heart rate and blood pressure levels. People who meditate are often much more grounded and level-headed than those who don’t seek out relaxing activities. There are several different types of meditation to try, so find out which one works for you by trying out a few of them.

3. Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress, and fast! It helps get any extra energy and adrenaline out of your body. However, many people tend to avoid the gym when they’re stressed out, believing it pulls away from the precious time they have. This is far from the truth. Breaking a sweat releases endorphins, burns calories, but it also sharpens the mind. Even spending a mere 20 minutes at the gym can have profound stress-releasing effects. Don’t have a gym membership? Just take a run or a walk outside and watch as you find yourself more relaxed, collected and in shape!

4. Get a massage

Though massages might seem like they only relax the muscles and relieve physical tension, they also can lower your stress levels. Try getting a Swedish massage or an aromatherapy massage, both of which are proven to help improve circulation, control breathing and regulate heartbeat. The muscles actually hold stress and toxins, and massage can help flush them out, leaving you feeling calm and comfortable.
